Students used a T-Chart to document noticings/possible reasons why author, Richard Connell, would structure lines 512 through 526 in the manner he did.
What students discovered was the intentional and creative use of prepositional phrases. As one student put it, "The author had to choose his words very carefully because he needs to show the level of intensity and he needs to make it very clear about how Rainsford is feeling." Rainsford had fought his way through the bush for two hours. "I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve," he said, through tight teeth.
